Mahjong and the Coronavirus

By now, public reaction to the coronavirus has escalated.

Numerous of public cancellations are everywhere, especially among the sport leagues and tournaments.  My main club event in Anime Central has been canceled as the convention itself is canceled.  My state of Illinois has ordered its citizens to remain in-shelter.  Even the Tokyo Olympics this year has been postponed.  Nearing the end of March, the numbers have grown significantly since this whole thing started prior to the New Year.  Cases are constantly being monitored.  For the regular person, we are either ordered or encouraged to stay inside and flatten the curve.

As far as mahjong is concerned, mahjong groups have contributed by abstaining from mahjong meetups and turning to the Internet for their mahjong club activity.  My club has gone as far as March 14 as our last live meet up before hunkering down.

Last weekend was our first session online with voice chat.  It was a fun day, as we maintained our camaraderie.  Unfortunately, I still cannot play due to my Lenten promise and much needed long break from online play.  At least, I was still able to "participate" with some conversation, laughs, and spectating.

For now, mahjong oriented discords are all over the place.  Don't be afraid to join people for some games.  If you cannot find any mahjong related discords, then I suggest Mahjong Discord.  From there, others may be easily found.

Despite the virus, MLeague continues to play.  On camera, they appear to be playing their league games as normal.  Yet, they are fully aware of the virus situation.

So for the most part, this year of 2020 has been a bad year globally, socially, and personally.  At this point, it has been a month since my cat was put down.  How am I holding up?  Just fine doing my best to cope with everything so far.

We continue to trod on, with the virus threat everywhere.  Eventually, this pandemic will subside like previous ones.  Though, this one has been particularly horrible.  Until then, everyone stay safe, stay clean.  Sooner or later, we'll be playing real tile mahjong again.
